Classic Literature Comes to Life on TV

March 13, 2013

So I’ve been noticing a trend lately.  There are A LOT of shows out there that are using classic literature as inspiration for good TV (and sometimes less good).  Here are the examples I’ve noticed lately:

Grimm’s Fairy Tales = Grimm, Once Upon a Time

Count of Monte Cristo = Revenge

The Works of Edgar Allen Poe = The Following (not a direct adaptation, but heavily influenced by)

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde = Do No Harm (though that was cancelled after 2 episodes)

Faust = 666 Park Avenue (also cancelled)

Sherlock Holmes = Sherlock, Elementary

Dracula = Dracula (coming this fall)

I’m sure that there are more that I’m not aware of, but I find this fascinating.  It’s hard to come up with something original, since shows keep trying to repeat something that was a hit 5 years ago.  And it’s not like shows in the past haven’t tried this, but I’m finding that there are so many right now.

I wonder what is behind this trend…..and what other works of classic literature will emerge as potential TV series…..
