Jay Leno Leaving….but for real this time.

March 23, 2013

Here we go again.  NBC has announced that Jimmy Fallon will be taking over Jay Leno‘s desk on The Tonight Show in 2014.

Haven’t we heard this before?  Was there a popular super tall, ginger-haired comedian who was not only promised, but given Jay Leno’s desk, only to have it ripped away from him when Jay couldn’t hack it in primetime?

Oh right.  Conan O’Brien.

NBC.  What, what, what are you doing?  What’s Jay going to do this time?  Retire?  Another stab at primetime?

It would seem that even though Leno’s ratings are still better than David Letterman’s and Jimmy Kimmel‘s, NBC is worried that he will start losing younger viewers soon.  So he’s being scheduled to be replaced BEFORE he’s losing any viewers.

Anyone else think this is really messed up?  NBC clearly has no idea what it’s doing in the late night game.  This was evident four years ago when Leno lots hundreds of viewers to Team CoCo.  And now, even with Leno on top, they’re going to oust him because of the POSSIBILITY he MIGHT lose some younger viewers.

You know what younger viewers are doing at 11:30 on weeknights?  Studying.  Sleeping.  Partying.  Having sex. Watching movies, or Netflix, or Hulu or anything OTHER than late night TV.  Calm down NBC.  You’re not losing viewers to Kimmel.  You’re just losing them.
