The Best Webseries, Part 1

July 9, 2013

So, as I continue to work on producing my own webseries, I’ve found a lot of really great ones. Here are some of my favorites in no particular order:

Burning Love: A dating show parody starring Ken Marino as a bachelor fireman and chock full of guest stars like Jennifer Aniston, Kristen Bell, Ken Jeong, Malin Akerman, Christine Taylor and Ben Stiller.  I’ve only seen the first season so far, but there are 3, and I have no doubt that the second two are as brilliant as the first.  Highlights include a contestant who never wears pants and is always drunk, and a homeless contestant who is only on the show so she’ll have somewhere to live for a little while.

Husbands: Two gay celebrities, an actor and an athlete get married in Vegas after two weeks of dating because it’s legal all of a sudden.  As the first high profile gay married couple, they can’t get divorced, cause it would hurt the cause, so they have to figure it out. Starring Brad Bell and Sean Hemeon, the show is written and produced by Jane Espenson of Buffy/Angel fame.  Notable guest stars include Nathan Fillion and Joss Whedon. Two seasons so far and gearing up for a third.

Shelf Life: I’ve seen the first of the four seasons (season 4 is about to wrap up) of this irreverent and hilarious look at four action figures and their antics when the little boy who owns them leaves the room…and sometimes even when he doesn’t.

The Outs: There are seven episodes in this series, which is complete.  It centers on two gay men, who are ex-boyfriends as they navigate life without each other.  The person to really watch in this is Sasha Winters as Oona, the snarky best friend of one of the guys.  She also co-wrote the series and captivates the screen.

Look Up in the Sky: This is a webseries that is local to Seattle about a group of people who graduated high school together who hold the key to saving the world, if they don’t kill each other first.  I actually auditioned for this, and though I’m not in it, I watch it religiously.  One season so far.

Hunting Season: I’m obsessed with this one.  It’s like a gay Sex and the City.  Which is redundant.  But still.  Based on a blog about a gay man and his exploits, a group of four gay male friends navigate love and sex in New York City.  Starring the delicious Ben Baur, Jake Manabat, Jack Ferver, and Marc Sinoway as well as a host of hotties.  And yes, there are uncensored episodes. One season so far.
